We recently designed a set of bookcases for someone, and wanted to get an idea of the total weight of books that might be stored. Just 3.75metres of bookcase with seven levels of books gave 26.25metres of shelving at a potential loading of about 40kilos / metre (we weighed a pile of books), and the result – over 1 tonne of paper!
This is just one reason why we make all our shelves out of solid wood rather than MDF, as over time even thick MDF would sag!
